Here is another scenario for which I would like your creative input. Though the following is just one story, but there are many places throughout where I've asked for your responses. In this case, I'll share with you my actual responses, where I did not do so in the previous post.
Let me set this up. It was 8:55, and we were to open at 9. I heard a customer (an older gentleman) on the other side of the rolling shutter say to another customer, "Is this the kind of place that opens on time, or they just open whenever they feel like it? It's after 9:00." I chuckled to myself and continued my pre-opening duties. Then, right as my clock and cell phone struck 9:00, I hit the button, and the large rolling shutters opened. As my cashier had not yet arrived, I helped the first customer in line, followed by the complaining man. He got to the register and said, "I need some Claritin-D. Just so you know, yours costs more than Costco's. I can get twice as much for about the same price. Can you believe that? Ridiculous!" (#1 - Your response to that goes here.) My response was, "Well, Costco is usually cheaper than we are on most items." He replied in disgust, "Uh, no! It never is. You're supposed to be the low price leader. I mean, Walmart is always supposed to be cheaper. (#2 - Your response goes here.) I wasted my breath by explaining to him how wholesale prices are usually cheaper than retail prices. Then he said, "I grew up a few hours north of here, and where I grew up, it didn't matter what time it was. If there was someone waiting in line, you helped that person. You didn't wait until it was time to open." (#3 - Your response goes here.) I shrugged my shoulders, seemingly unaffected by his comment, and replied, "Oh? We just open on time here." What I wanted to say was, "Well here we don't put ourselves out for people that don't plan ahead." He said, "You certainly did not open on time. You were five minutes late." I responded, "Interesting, because my atomic clock and cell phone both said 9:00 AM when I opened those shutters." He came right back with, "Well my watch is set to atomic time, and it said five minutes after." (#4 - Your response goes here.) I responded lightly, "Oh? You may want to get that watch checked out." His next comment was, "It's good you had your most difficult customer at the beginning of the day. Now the rest of your day can be good once you get me out of the way." (#5 - Your response goes here.) I laughingly said, "You? A difficult customer? Compared to what I usually deal with, you're a breeze...a pussycat...a walk in the park." I could tell he was disappointed by my lack of frustration and his failure at reaching a quota of annoying 50 people per day. That day, he only bothered 49. I was more amused than anything else. This typed account hardly does the man justice. He was just so funny, though that was not his intention.
